There are sixteen days in Oktoberfest 2026. Two of them sit quietly between the big weekends and let you walk into Augustiner at three in the afternoon. This page is about those two.

Best Days: Tuesday to Thursday

The sweet spot for visiting Oktoberfest is Tuesday through Thursday, especially before 3 PM. On these weekday mornings, most tents are at 40-60% capacity. You will find open tables, friendly service, and a relaxed Bavarian atmosphere without the crushing weekend crowds. Tuesday is typically the quietest day of the entire festival. Arriving around 10 AM on a weekday gives you the best chance of walking straight into popular tents like Schottenhamel or Augustiner without any wait.

Worst Days: Opening Saturday and Final Weekend

Opening Saturday (Sep 19) is the single busiest day. Tens of thousands arrive early to witness the "O'zapft is!" tapping ceremony, and most tents are completely full by 10 AM. The final weekend (Oct 2-4) is equally packed as locals and tourists rush in for one last celebration. Italian Weekend (the first weekend of October) traditionally draws huge crowds from Italy. If you visit on any of these days, arrive by 8 AM or accept that you may only get standing-room access in some tents.

For Families with Children
Visit on a Tuesday during Familientag (Family Day), when ride prices are reduced and the atmosphere is calmer. Weekday mornings between 10 AM and 1 PM are ideal. Children enjoy the rides, the Oide Wiesn (traditional section), and the relaxed pace without overwhelming crowds. Avoid Fridays and Saturdays entirely with young children.
For Party-Goers
Friday and Saturday evenings are peak party time with live bands playing full sets and the most energetic atmosphere. Arrive before noon to secure your seat, because after 3 PM you will not find a spot inside any major tent. Thursday evening is a great compromise, as the mood is already festive but the crowds are about 30% smaller than on Fridays.
For First-Time Visitors
Wednesday or Thursday is your ideal day. You get traditional music, friendly locals, and enough space to explore comfortably. Start with the Augustiner-Festhalle or Ochsenbraterei, which are easier to enter than Schottenhamel or Hofbräu. Arrive by 11 AM, enjoy lunch with a Mass of beer, explore the rides and stalls in the afternoon, then decide if you want to stay for the evening atmosphere.

Weather Considerations

Late September in Munich averages 12-18 degrees Celsius with frequent rain. The first week of the festival (late September) is typically warmer and sunnier than the final days in October. Rainy days are actually a hidden advantage, as they reduce outdoor queues and thin out the crowds. Always bring a light waterproof jacket. Sunny weekend days are the absolute busiest, so if the forecast shows sun on a Saturday, expect extreme crowds.
No. 07 / Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the best day of the week to visit Oktoberfest?
- Tuesday is the quietest day, followed by Wednesday and Thursday. These midweek days offer the shortest wait times, the easiest access to beer tents, and a more relaxed atmosphere compared to weekends.
- What time should I arrive at Oktoberfest?
- On weekdays, arriving between 10 AM and 11 AM gives you plenty of time to find seats. On weekends, you should arrive before 9 AM if you want to sit inside a tent. Some groups line up as early as 7 AM on Saturdays.
- Is it worth visiting Oktoberfest on opening day?
- Opening day (Sep 19) is extraordinary if you enjoy massive celebrations. The tapping ceremony at noon draws huge crowds - arrive by 7-8 AM to get inside the Schottenhamel tent. It is the most crowded day of the entire festival.
- Does rain affect Oktoberfest attendance?
- Yes, rainy days see 20-30% fewer visitors. Since the beer tents are fully covered and heated, rain mainly reduces the outdoor crowds and ride queues. A rainy weekday is arguably the best time to visit if you do not mind the weather.
- Which week of Oktoberfest is less crowded?
- The weekdays during the first full week (Sep 22-25 in 2026) are generally the least crowded period of the entire festival. The second week sees more visitors due to Italian Weekend and the approaching end of the festival.
