Frequently Asked Questions About Safety
Is Oktoberfest safe?
Yes. Oktoberfest has an extensive security concept with thousands of police officers, security guards and paramedics. The crime rate is comparatively low for an event of this size. Nevertheless, stay alert and use common sense. How do I protect myself from pickpockets?
Bring as few valuables as possible. Keep your phone and wallet in inside pockets or a cross-body bag. Never hang a handbag over the back of your chair. Split larger amounts of cash across different pockets. Be especially vigilant in crowds. What is the 'Sichere Wiesn' (Safe Wiesn)?
The 'Sichere Wiesn für Mädchen und Frauen' is a help point specifically for women and girls who feel uncomfortable or harassed. It is located directly on the grounds (at Bavariaring) and offers counseling, protection and, if needed, a safe escort home. Can I bring my backpack?
Only if it is smaller than 20 x 15 x 10 cm (about 3 liters). That is roughly the size of a small handbag. Larger backpacks, suitcases and bags are prohibited. Best approach: bring only the essentials in a small bag or your pockets. What do I do in a medical emergency?
Call 112 or approach the nearest security staff. The BRK first aid station is located at Bavariaring and is staffed around the clock. Every beer tent also has trained first aiders. Are there surveillance cameras?
Yes, the entire festival grounds are under video surveillance. The cameras are monitored by police for safety purposes. There are also security checks at all entrances. What happens if I am too drunk?
Heavily intoxicated visitors are escorted out of the tents by security. In serious cases, you may be taken to the BRK first aid station - the paramedics will look after you until you can safely get home. No cost, but not a pleasant experience.
